Veterinary Neurology

Veterinary neurology is the branch of medicine that diagnoses and treats diseases of the brain, spine, musculoskeletal and peripheral nervous system in cats and dogs, including:

  • Brain tumors
  • Seizures
  • Balance disorders
  • Weakness
  • Paralysis
  • Degenerative myelopathy
  • Intervertebral disk disease
  • Neck or back pain
  • Encephalitis (inflammation disease of the central nervous system)

Many breeds of cats and dogs are susceptible to neurological conditions. For example a number of breeds, including dachshunds, are at risk of intervertebral disk disease. If your dog or cat is exhibiting any signs of neurological conditions, please call us as soon as possible. We will give your pet a thorough evaluation using advanced diagnostic equipment. When we examine a pet with possible neurological problems, we attempt to determine its cause, localize the problem, estimate the extent of the problem and estimate your pet’s prognosis with and without treatment.

Signs of possible neurological disease:

  • Seizures
  • Paralysis and limb weakness, collapsing
  • Balance disorders
  • Vision problem
  • Difficulty swallowing or chewing
  • Decreased facial movement
  • Hearing loss
  • Behavioral changes—pacing, wandering, confusion
  • Drop Jaw

If your pet is exhibiting any of these symptoms, please give us a call.
