Elwood sits in the heart of Huntington Township, just minutes from West Hills — making it one of the most conveniently located communities we serve. The area’s suburban parks and walking trails see heavy use in summer, and heat stroke in dogs is among the most serious — and most preventable — emergencies we treat from the Elwood area. Long Island’s humid summers create real risk for pets left outdoors or exercised heavily in high temperatures.
Body temperatures above 104°F in dogs cause organ failure rapidly — emergency cooling protocols, IV fluids, and organ function monitoring are started immediately.
Panting, lethargy, and weakness in hot weather are warning signs — IV rehydration and electrolyte support provided urgently.
Summer months bring increased insect activity — anaphylactic reactions to bee or wasp stings require epinephrine and emergency supportive care.
Warm, humid summers exacerbate ear infections and hot spots in dogs — our emergency and general medicine team treats both.

An Elwood family’s 11-year-old mixed breed had been slowing down which they attributed to age. Then one afternoon he collapsed in the backyard. He was breathing, but his gums were pale and he couldn’t stand. They were at West Hills in 12 minutes. ECG revealed a severe cardiac arrhythmia. Emergency stabilization with IV antiarrhythmics normalized his heart rhythm over several hours. Follow-up echocardiography through Gold Coast’s cardiology team confirmed dilated cardiomyopathy manageable, with the right medication. The dog is now on a cardiac protocol and doing well. His owners say the collapse felt like the worst day of their lives. The 12-minute drive to West Hills made it a story with a very different ending.
